Tools for Change: Five Things I Wish I Knew When I First Became Politically Active Mar 26/14

“Campaigns don’t win through the execution of one tactic, but through the implementation of many tactics that usually follow a certain order.  Social change rarely happens through one tactic alone but it can happen when you launch a political campaign.”

The NHPPA regularly hears questions such as, “Why is it taking so long to change things?” and we came across an excellent article by Jessica Bell of Tools for Change which explains just how political change can happen.

The piece is a wide-ranging treasure chest of advice for activists with some fascinating infographics. If you ever get frustrated with the pace of progress, or the lack of engagement when you are trying to educate your networks, this piece is one to go back to time and again.

It explains why political campaigns work best in stages, tactic by tactic, why it pays to keep tight focus on a single aim and how people’s engagement with your issues tends to move incrementally.

Tools for Change run workshops in the Toronto area for groups and individuals who want to be more effective at what they do. They cover such topics as direct action, coalition building, group decision-making and more.

This is a website to watch!

Here is another great source of information on how to plan and execute an effective campaign. In The Art of Campaigning, veteran activist Des Wilson describes the principles of campaign planning; research, writing, target setting and preparation.

“Do it well. What you produce is your credibility.”

Shawn Buckley’s Total Health 2014 Keynote Lecture: CETA, Natural Health Products & Bill C-17 Mar 19/14

Much has happened, and is changing, since last year, both here in Canada and internationally. Shawn has taken some time to put together yet another new Total Health Show presentation for his keynote lecture of 2014. Shawn will be speaking in Room 205 at Toronto’s Convention Centre on Saturday April 5th and Sunday April 6th from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  He will be available before and after each talk for questions at NHPPA’s Booth #209.

The political and legislative landscape alters constantly. These are the issues we must have front and centre as we educate our networks and our elected representatives this year:

Moving Out of the Eye of the Hurricane and into the Storm

“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. The introduction of Bill C-17, which is a partial resurrection of the infamous Bill C-51 is a matter that everyone interested in protecting their access to natural health products needs to educate themselves on.  We are also facing enforcement of the NHP Regulations in 2014 in a way we have not seen before.  Learn about this and also get updated on the status of the secret Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union (“CETA”). Although the Government has touted that a comprehensive agreement has been reached, the details remain secret. One of the primary concerns is that Canada will adopt restrictive European Union regulations governing natural health products.“

As ever, we will be placing a video of the presentation on our website as soon as it is available, so that you can stay up-to-date from coast to coast.

Thank you to those to responded to our ask for the funds to attend Total Health Show without impacting our other work. It’s vital this year that we stay on target to complete the campaigns which will bring the Charter of Health Freedom to parliament. At the same time, it is getting more and more expensive for us to attend these shows. We are still short some of the vital funding which goes into the presentation, promotion, travel, booth set up/staff and largely the educational material you rely on us to get out to the public from year to year.

Please consider a one-off contribution to help us, help you.

Should Disease Prevention Be Tax Deductible? Mar 14/14

Dr. Zoltan Rona MD MSc asks this question in a hard hitting and wide-ranging article in Vitality Magazine this month. The piece outlines the ways in which natural products and pharmaceuticals are treated differently by the tax system. Dr Rona explains that his patients who use NHPs are hit in two ways by the tax system, not only are they most usually ineligible for exemption on a tax return, they also incur HST.

This is clearly becoming a hot topic with consumers, since Shawn Buckley and Genevieve Eliany wrote of similar frustration among their clients in last month’s Alive Magazine.

Dr Rona’s article goes on to demonstrate that the current NHP regulations have taken tax exempt status away from some products, and points out that the hyper-regulation we are now seeing has driven prices up as well, forcing many Canadians to shop over the border. He concludes with an update on the current class action lawsuit and advises readers to complain to their MP.He suggests that you find out where your MP stands on the issues and make the current government bias against natural health products an election issue.

This article is an excellent addition to any information you are planning to send to your MP during our upcoming Step 2 of the Charter to 308 MPs campaign. If you send Dr Rona’s article to your MP, as he suggests, be sure to add that your constituency office has already received a print copy of the Charter of Health Freedom and that it is a ready-made solution to the problem of over-regulation.

“Herbalists and Regulation: A Double-Edged Sword” by Richard DeSylva RH DNM Mar 12/14

The regulation of herbalists is a hot topic across the Pond right now, with the UK looking warily to the European Union and wondering if and when EU-type regulation will spread.

Dr. Robert Verkerk, friend and ally of NHPPA, recently wrote a piece for his organization’s weekly e-Alert: Crunch Time For UK Herbalists. In it he analyzes the pros and cons of statutory vs voluntary regulation for herbalists.

As the world gets ever smaller with regard to harmonization of regulations we felt it was timely to ask a Canadian expert for a review of the situation for herbalists here. We approached Richard DeSylva, another friend of NHPPA and one of Canada’s leading herbalists, for a review of the situation for herbalists here at home.

He makes the point that herbalists have ‘flown under the radar’ until relatively recently, with the government assuming that there weren’t enough of them to warrant attention. Organizing together to gain a voice therefore carried with it a risk that they would attract regulatory attention. But who defines what a herbalist is if the practitioners don’t organize? Is it better to work with the Federal and Provincial governments or not? This fascinating and thought-provoking analysis is a must-read for anyone who takes an interest in regulatory matters.

Richard DeSylva Registered Herbalist and Doctor of Natural Medicine is a founding member of the Ontario Herbalist Association, and the Canadian Council of Herbalist Associations and sits on both Boards. He writes, teaches, researches and lectures on botanic medicine. He has been in clinical practice for over 35 years.

Dr. Robert Verkerk PhD is the founder, executive and scientific director of Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) International. He is one of the world’s leading experts on Codex, GMOs and the international implications of individual governments’ actions in the natural health field. He is internationally recognized as a leader in agricultural, environmental and health sustainability.

Richard DeSylva holds conferences with Robert Verkerk, Shawn Buckley and other key international health freedom leaders to develop strategies that support unified action.

Helke is a friend, supporter and colleague of NHPPA and has a gift for our subscribers: a free download of her latest book, first published in 2013.

Helke’s decision to make this book a complimentary download to both NHPPA’s membership and the natural health community, is not without a dramatic back story!

This anthology is packed with advice and information on how to pick your battles and harness your outrage. Find out how to how to tell genuine research from propaganda and learn the history of modern medical attitudes. With commentary, book reviews and articles from industry experts you will go back to this resource time after time.

Helke advises, “There are many causes, all equally worthy. The one that makes you angry and speaks to you profoundly—that’s the one that picked you.” She articulates the cause that picked us at the NHPPA, “…we are heading for ‘tyranny light’ as our governments determinedly proceed to ensure that we are protected in every which way except the way we want.” Whether your personal cause is naturopathic practice, food safety, cancer treatment, EMF protection, the drugging of children or a combination of these, you will find up-to-date information, advice and the tools you need to “have the courage to use your own reason.”

Helke has taken the unusual step of reviewing her own book, in order to explain why it is a free download. This review, in itself, is a powerful education in environmental illness.
