MOVING OUT OF THE EYE OF THE HURRICANE AND INTO THE STORM

A lot has changed since Shawn’s last presentation at Total Health 2013. Not only is Health Canada in the throes of full enforcement of the NHP Regulations; recent months have seen the introduction of Bill C-17 (“Vanessa’s Law”) as well as media reports, carrying few actual details, about CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement).

Shawn asks several questions in his new talk. Beginning with: “Were we [NHPPA] wrong to predict that the Regulations would lead to product losses?”

He observes,

“People are complacent because when you walk into a health food store…the shelves are full. But if you are a person that relies on a product that is missing…if you are a person that relies on a product that’s been dumbed down, you’re in trouble.” (minute 20:30 on video)

He points out that the number of bottles still on the shelves is irrelevant if a lost product or sub-therapeutic dosage means you are required to shift to a more harmful pharmaceutical drug. He asks,

“When you’re regulating in the area of public health, shouldn’t you ask the question ‘are we [Health Canada] going to cause deaths?'” (minute 14:45 on video)

Regarding the secrecy surrounding CETA, Shawn states that, “Government secrecy is not consistent with a liberal democracy,” and adds that the European Union regulations regarding NHPs are even more draconian than our own.

Finally, Shawn discusses Vanessa’s Law in some detail, observing that the tragic death of a young girl, taking a pharmaceutical drug as prescribed, is absolutely deplorable, but that,

“Vanessa’s story is being used to promote this bill…apparently to make us safer…whenever the government chooses to use a personal story, it is meant to garner our support through emotion.” (minute 28:30 on video)

He explains the ways in which the government already has the power to recall or seize dangerous medications. The only difference Bill C-17 will make is that no court will be able to scrutinize the evidence. Shawn asks,

“If the minister already has the power to protect us from dangerous products, why is it that we have to give bureaucrats the authority secretly to take control over property?” (minute 33:30 on video)

CTV Reports on Pradaxa Deaths Apr 23/14

pradaxa_shark_square 500

CTV reported this week on the dangers of Pradaxa, as news broke of the first Canadian family to sue the drug’s makers. On the market in Canada since 2008, this blood-thinning medication has no known antidote and ER doctors in the US have been sounding alarm bells for some time.

Dr W Gifford-Jones wrote an article mentioning Pradaxa in the Toronto Sun last March. It generated a scathing reply from Scott Sawler of Health Canada’s NHPD, which is still available to view on Health Canada’s website.

Dr Gifford-Jones wrote:

…why are natural remedies being removed from health food stores while drugs that kill remain available?

Dr. Zoltan Rona, an expert on natural remedies, recently told me, “Health Canada has been raiding health food stores, terrorizing proprietors and confiscating natural food supplements.” He asked: “Could you help to stop it?”

Rona described a New York Times report showing the U.S. government’s primary suspect in 542 deaths was Pradaxa, a blood thinning agent. Moreover, when this drug causes bleeding, there is no antidote to stop it. Health Canada issued an advisory in December based on new information that it’s not to be used in patients with artificial heart valves. However, it has not removed Pradaxa from the market.

It has removed a competitor, the soy-derived enzyme Nattokinase, a safe, effective, natural blood thinner that has not harmed anyone and has been used for centuries in Japan.

Health Canada’s reply included the telling line:

Since blood thinners carry a risk of internal bleeding, their health benefits must outweigh this risk.

Clearly the ‘risk’ only matters for a natural product with zero deaths on its record. We have submitted Access to Information requests to Health Canada for the number of deaths linked to all natural health products…there are none.

Thanks to the CTV report we now know that:

According to the Health Canada Adverse Drug Reaction database, there have been more than 1,700 adverse reaction reports and 281 deaths linked to Pradaxa from the time the drug was approved for use in this country in 2008 up until December 2013.

We can only conclude that Health Canada’s definition of ‘risk’ is different for pharmaceuticals.

TAKE ACTION

NHPPA has submitted a News Item on CTV’s contact form (provided for you below) that asks to have Avis Favaro Medical Specialist, and CTV National News and producer, Elizabeth St. Philip follow up this story with a report on Nattokinase.

We think the CTV should ask Health Canada about the ban on Nattokinase.

If you would like the national news to shine a light on what is happening to natural health products, now is the time to get in touch.

Either go to CTV’s Newsbreaker Page  and use their form to tell them this is a news story that Canadians need to know about or email CTV’s Medical Report.

CBC’s Report on the Cochrane Collaboration Analysis of Tamiflu Clinical Trials Apr 18/14

NATIONS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE SPENT BILLIONS STOCKPILING ANTIVIRAL DRUGS. CANADA ALONE SPENT ALMOST $200 MILLION.

These decisions were made without access to approximately half of the clinical data available to the manufacturers.

In a report titled Tamiflu’s effectiveness questioned CBC’s The National covers an independent analysis of reports on antiviral drugs which have not been released until now. The report states, “Two antiviral drugs have mediocre effects on relieving flu symptoms, according to a review by independent experts.”

The Cochrane Collaboration is an internationally renowned human health care and policy research body. The group has been fighting for the right to access all data since 2009, when nations around the world began stockpiling the drug in anticipation of a ‘bird flu’ pandemic.

We now know that prior to April 2013, fewer than half of the clinical studies on these two drugs had been published. At the time Roche, the makers of  Tamiflu gave the Cochrane group access to one part of just 10 Tamiflu trials. There are 74 in total.

Charter of Health Freedom Petition Update, Total Health Show Report and Photo Gallery Apr 16/14

CHARTER OF HEALTH FREEDOM PETITION UPDATE

The Charter petition topped 93,000 signatures by lunchtime on Saturday April 5—the second day of the Total Health show. By the end of the weekend, we had reached 93,236.

We need only 2829 more signatures to become equal to the largest Federal petition to be delivered to Parliament, in one single submission, since April 27, 1999. We consulted Ottawa’s Clerk of Petitions for figures on the largest Canadian Federal petitions. Parliament’s searchable archives go back 25 years. It is possible then, that when we reach our next milestone, of over 100,000 signatures, the Charter of Health Freedom will be on record, as second only to the Bill of Rights in public support!

TOTAL HEALTH SHOW REPORT AND PHOTO GALLERY

We’ve just received Shawn’s lecture video from the April 4-6 weekend and are prepping it to upload to YouTube.

In the meantime we have compiled a photo gallery and show report for you.

Charter to 308 MPs Campaign Step 2 Launch at Total Health 2014 Apr 10/14

NEW CAMPAIGN AND NEW MATERIALS FOR 2014

NHPPA launched several new tools for you to use at last weekend’s Total Health Show. Our visitors were excited to collect the first copies of our new 2014 articles and packages.

LAUNCHED: STEP 2 OF THE CHARTER TO 308 MPS CAMPAIGN:
THE REBUTTALS

Last summer every federal MP received at least one print copy of the Charter of Health Freedom. Many of you went above and beyond, sending packages to neighbouring ridings, visiting your MP and engaging in protracted conversations.

The responses you received were disappointing. We have placed the MP letters you forwarded to us on our website for all to see.

Shawn analyzed the replies, party by party and point by point, to produce a rebuttal document for every MP to read.

He observes:

“It was interesting in an Orwellian sort of way, to analyze the MP responses to the Charter of Health Freedom (the “Charter”). What jumped out at me immediately, was that none of the responses mentioned or spoke of the Charter. One would think that when the Charter is dropped off, along with a summary of the Charter and a letter demanding action, that some mention of the MP’s thoughts on the Charter would be made.”

This document, including questions to ask all MPs, as well as specific questions directed at the MPs who sent replies, was available at the show for your comments and feedback. It accompanied a full information pack to continue, deepen (and frequently correct) the conversation with MPs.

We are now processing the reactions from those of you who chatted with us about the package.

Everyone across the country will have access to the campaign launched at Toronto’s Total Health Show, within the next week.

New Article in Vitality Magazine: Illegal Remedies Exploring the Federal Prejudice Against NHPs Apr 9/14

 May_13_ShawnBuckley5

SHAWN BUCKLEY’S ARTICLE IN APRIL’S EDITION OF VITALITY MAGAZINE IS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

Shawn’s keynote topics for 2014 include CETA, Bill C-17 and our diminishing access to impartial courts.

“The store shelves are full, but are things truly rosy? If you depend on a product that is no longer available, or if you depend on a product that was more effective before Health Canada required a formulation change, then things are not rosy. If you are poor and can no longer afford NHPs which have gone up in price due to the additional costs the Regulations have caused, then no. Indeed, for the poor the Regulations have made natural remedies beyond reach.”
