The largest federal paper petition in Canadian history, that we know of, filed with the Canadian Clerk of Petitions stands at 630,542 signatures. Delivered by The Body Shop Canada on May 28, 2018, this petition called for a ban on the sale and manufacture of animal-tested cosmetic products.
Power of the people! We found out 31 petitions on this subject were presented to Parliament between 2016 and 2018 (presumably this includes the Body Shop petition) to support Bill S-214, to change the regulations in the Food & Drugs Act with respect to animal testing for cosmetic products. Details on each of the separate petitions are not available, however the House of Commons Publication search for “animals in research” shows the MPs who presented them and the dates.
Bill S-214 Summary: “This enactment amends the Food and Drugs Act to prohibit cosmetic animal testing and the sale of cosmetics developed or manufactured using cosmetic animal testing. It also provides that no evidence derived from animal testing may be used to establish the safety of a cosmetic.”
This Act will be cited as the Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act.
It has passed the third reading and was waiting for Royal Assent to become law (as at July 2019)
