We are now receiving reports from small manufacturers and retailers that they are being told by Health Canada to remove their citronella products from store shelves. We anticipate regulation enforcement to begin in December 2013. Just as we are experiencing with our NHPs, a variety of natural products are at risk. This is despite the fact that Health Canada reports:

“While no imminent health risks were identified with the use of these products [citronella], the companies marketing them have not provided adequate safety data to support their continued registration.”

Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) who regulates citronella as an insect repellent allows for the use of DEET, a well-studied toxic substance that many citronella users are trying to avoid. Side effects of DEET include death, side effects of citronella are an allergic skin reaction at most.
