Manufacturing Consent: Animal Welfare
Yesterday, Members of Parliament held the second reading debate on Bill C-224, a moment many supporters of natural health products and regulatory reform have been waiting for. Several MPs delivered powerful speeches in support of the bill, emphasizing the need to protect Canadians’ access to natural health products and to address what they described as Health Canada’s expanding regulatory powers. Supporters of the bill vastly outnumbered opponents. Dan Mazier opened the debate with an impassioned speech, Leslyn Lewis spoke about the thousands of letters, postcards, and petitions Canadians have sent to her office, Maxime Blanchette-Joncas expressed support for sending the bill to committee while calling for amendments, Garnett Genuis delivered a strong critique of regulatory overreach, and Blaine Calkins thanked the NHPPA — and Canadians across the country — for their relentless advocacy.
Opponents repeated familiar arguments defending Health Canada’s centralized authority and warning against reducing regulatory power. But the outcome marked a major moment: Parliament voted unanimously to send Bill C-224 to committee. This debate shows that access to natural health products is an issue MPs across party lines can no longer ignore.
At the same time, public momentum continues to grow. The Charter of Health Freedoms petition has now reached 157,057 signatures, one of the largest citizen petitions ever delivered in Canada. If you want to build on the momentum created by Bill C-224, you can help by urging legislators to support the Charter and ensure lasting protection for Canadians’ access to natural health products. Send an e-letter to Liberal MPs and the Standing Committee on Health and make sure Parliament understands that Canadians expect real action.
