Aired at the end of June 2014, what started out as a critique on Dr. Oz’s choice of words describing the efficacy of a particular supplement, deteriorated into a misguided attack on Natural Health Products (NHPs). Oliver finds fault with Dr. Oz’s “flowery” recommendations on the next “miraculous” or “magical” weight loss supplement but “marketing to engage” vs “clinical language” are two different things. He mocks Dr. Oz’s statements, “Miracle flowers? Are you a doctor or an Old-west travelling salesman? Have I got something miraculous for you ladies and gentlemen! A monkey’s paw, mixed with five petals of a rose and a thimble full of otter semen”. Educated consumers who are aware of the regulatory challenges surrounding NHPs will find this clip difficult to watch without inciting anger.
