Final Petition Drive at the 2018 Total Health Show

NHPPA’s 2018 Charter of Health Freedom petition drive starts next weekend at the Total Health Show! It’s been 10 years since the petition launch and timing to deliver it to Ottawa could not be better. There are two ways to participate so that our show count is the largest yet.

1) If you are in the Toronto area on May 11,12, 13, visit us at booth #426 and sign it! Make sure you pick up all of our new material on the latest proposals from Health Canada that have (no surprise) an increased their threat to natural health products and practices.

2) Can’t make it to the show but want to be a part of bringing the Charter of Health Freedom to Ottawa?

Download the petition

Print. Sign. Then get 24 of your friends, family and colleagues to sign it too. As soon as the page is correctly filled, mail it back to NHPPA headquarters at: 5070 Fountain Street North, Breslau, Ontario, N0B 1M0 We’ll be anticipating your mailings. Make sure you add a return address! If it’s postmarked by Monday May 21, we’ll count it as part of the Total Health Show number. The show always generates a significant number of new names for the petition when the public finds out how progressive Canada’s health freedom future would look with the Charter enacted.

The Charter of Health Freedom is proposed legislation that gives Natural Health Products and Traditional Medicines their own Act

More on the Charter

NHPPA started collecting petition signatures in 2008 and we are now the second largest Federal paper petition, to be delivered all at once in the last 25 years, with 96,497 signatures. It’s a petition that is making Canadian history. We would love for you to help us hit another milestone with this drive.

… and one last important element:

NHPPA will be running a number of targeted campaigns that will be difficult for MPs and Health Canada bureaucrats to ignore. The coming months will be very interesting, and even more so with you involved. While we run a a final concentrated push for more signatures, we will be seeking a Federal MP who will confidently table the Charter of Health Freedom in the House of Commons.

Where are the last 10 years of Charter petitions?

Our last official update and full recount for integrity took place on June 23 2017.

“Georgian College Cancels Diploma in Homeopathy”, CBC | Shawn Buckley Responds

A friend sent me articles about the homeopathy program at Georgian College being attacked and of the College caving in and cancelling the program. She wanted to know what I thought about the articles and the attack on the program. As I sat back reflecting upon what I thought, I noticed that one of the articles was dated February 9, 2018 titled “Georgian College Cancels Diploma in Homeopathy” (3 minute, 30 second read), by Kelly Crowe of the CBC. That brought back a memory that one of the first times I learned about homeopathy was during a CBC radio program I listened to while driving to Williams Lake decades ago. This was before I understood the value of natural remedies such as homeopathic remedies. The program was speaking about how, at the time of the 1918 flu pandemic which killed one out of every five North Americans, there were both homeopathic hospitals, and allopathic hospitals…

A Tribute to Lorna Hancock

We  you, Lorna!

Grassroots activism to protect the rights and privilege of Canadians to choose natural health products and practices is not new. HANS (Health Action Network Society), established 38 years ago, organized a tribute dinner to celebrate the tireless work of its founding member and director, Lorna Hancock, on March 16, 2018 in Vancouver. Lorna has dedicated most of her life to natural health awareness and freedom. In fact, she was at the first meeting with groups across Canada when the Charter of Health Freedom was unveiled. She has supported it ever since. Lorna sat on NHPPA’s Board and remains a trusted advisor and friend. Flowers and a letter of gratitude were sent to let her know the influence she has had on NHPPA’s work over the last 10 years.

In Narrative Therapy, Maori Creation Stores are Being Used to Heal, Stuff (New Zealand)

When culture becomes medicine. On March 9, 2018, Michelle Duff of New Zealand’s Stuff website wrote a piece (8 minute read), “In Narrative Therapy, Maori Creation Stories are Being Used to Heal”. Ms. Duff reports on a form of mental health treatment called “Mahi a Atua” which uses tales from Maori creation mythology help heal the trauma of European colonization of the Polynesian people who first settled in New Zealand between 1250 and 1300. The therapy is making a difference, with urgent requests for traditional psychiatric treatment for Maori youth decreasing by 50% within the first six months of the program.

“For many Maori, traditional mental health settings are intimidating. It’s almost like mental health services are way of colonizing people again. You come in, you’re disconnected from your land, your culture, and your language. You can’t articulate values that are part of your ancestry.”

Contemporize this concept to meet the ideologies of Western individualism. One’s deeply personal experience with illness and subsequent treatment should rest in the informed choices most resonant to our beliefs.

Remembering Shiv Chopra

“Personally, I have lost one of my heroes. I first had the honour of meeting Shiv when we were both on a panel at a health show. As the years went by, I had the pleasure of getting to know him better. The more I got to know Shiv, the more I respected him. I was always struck by the depth of his integrity. Lately, there have been too few who are willing to sacrifice to stand up for what they believe is right. Shiv was one of the few.” – Shawn Buckley

On February 24, 2018, Dr. Shiv Chopra was remembered in a celebration of life event hosted by the Canadian Council on Food Safety and Health in Ottawa. NHPPA’s Executive Director has a copy of Shiv’s book “Corrupt to the Core” in which Shiv inscribed, “We Shall Succeed”. It is appropriate to reflect on these words. He set the example for us by standing up for what was right. Let’s honour the author by following in his footsteps. We miss you, Shiv.

“Does the Herbal Supplement Kratom Really Contain Opioids?”, LiveScience

In this February 7, 2018 article (4 minute read), “Does the Herbal Supplement Kratom Really Contain Opioids?”, published by LiveScience, we learn about recent US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) research showing that many of the natural compounds found in Kratom bind to opioid receptors in the brain, which then classify the plant as a restricted substance. Last summer, NHPPA received a letter from a Kratom advocate. It shared a number of considered thoughts including a reference to an upswing in fear-based media coverage in both Canada and the US surrounding the use of Kratom products, and a report that retailers who offered Kratom were being intimidated into forfeiting sales of the supplement through unannounced visits by Health Canada. In the letter, NHPPA was asked if we had a stance on the use of Kratom as a natural health supplement.
