New Law Threatens Natural Health and Health Freedom
The recent passage of Canada’s 2024 Budget Bill, Bill C-69 into law marks a concerning development for the natural health industry and those concerned with maintaining their health freedoms. Division 31 of Bill C-69 is now active, and grants Health Canada significant powers over therapeutic products, including drugs and natural health products, which could have widespread implications.
Key Concerns:
- Restricting healthcare professionals’ ability to use therapeutic products for off-label purposes
- Blocking the public from purchasing veterinary drugs for human use
- Imposing fines up to $5,000,000 per day and potential imprisonment for non-compliance
- Allowing Health Canada to exempt foods and drugs from essential safety laws, risking fraudulent claims, adulteration, and unsafe manufacturing practices
- Approving drugs based on incomplete data or foreign regulatory decisions
It was inappropriate to include changes to health policy in a Budget Bill. These changes are alarming and represent a significant shift in policy that many find unacceptable.
