MP Majid Jowhari responded to a concerned citizen’s letter regarding Health Canada’s regulatory changes. His response included several common talking points, one of which is often misunderstood.
We are frequently told that the “recent regulatory changes and initiatives by Health Canada are driven by concerns over non-compliance issues that could potentially harm consumers”.
To substantiate this claim, Health Canada cited a single audit of the natural health industry from 2021.
This audit did not use a randomized sample of the natural health products available in Canada; instead, it targeted 75 products already identified as problematic.
Is this truly a reliable way to assess the safety of an entire industry?
It’s important to remember that Health Canada already possesses extensive powers to address any non-compliance issues. They can:
- Order the stop-sale of any product
- Revoke the license of any product
- Seize any product
- Conduct random site inspections at any time
And remember, every product on the market is pre-approved by Health Canada and assigned a Natural Product Number (NPN).
