MP Vance Badawey’s Response To Shawn Buckley’s Letter

MP Vance Badawey’s recent letter to Shawn Buckley aims to provide reassurance. But, let’s dig deeper.

MP Badawey claims that extending Vanessa’s Law to natural health products is necessary for Health Canada to take stronger action when safety issues arise. But here’s what he’s not telling you: Health Canada already has all the powers it needs to ensure the safety and compliance of natural health products.

REGULATIONS HAVE BEEN IN PLACE SINCE 2004:

  • Every product must be licensed by Health Canada, displaying an NPN or DIN-HM number on its label. This includes providing detailed evidence of safety, efficacy, and more.
  • Health Canada must approve all health claims before they can appear on labels.
  • Health Canada can conduct unannounced inspections at any business, seize products and equipment, pull products from the market, and even revoke licenses.
  • Noncompliance can lead to criminal charges, including fines up to $5,000 and/or 3 years in prison.

So, what’s the real reason behind extending Vanessa’s Law?

It’s not about safety—it’s about giving Health Canada even more control, despite already having ample authority to protect Canadians.

FEE REDUCTIONS?

The fee reductions Health Canada proposes are no victory. Even with a 50% reduction, multiple manufacturers have stated they may need to pull up to 90% of their products from the Canadian market. Some may be forced to close their doors entirely.

WHO IS REALLY PROTECTED?

These so-called “modernizations” are a direct threat to the availability and affordability of natural health products. This isn’t about protecting us—it’s about profit.

Help us protect access to natural health products and preserve your right to choose.
