MP John Aldag’s Response To A Constituent’s Letter

In his response to a citizen’s letter, MP John Aldag referenced a study claiming that “88% of sampled natural health products were advertised with false or misleading product information and 56% with misleading label information.”

This study is frequently cited by MPs. However, most of them, including MP Aldag, fail to disclose that these results are NOT based on a randomized sample of the Canadian natural health industry. Instead, the study relied on a sample of 75 natural health products already flagged as problematic, skewing the data.

It’s also important to note that Health Canada already possesses the necessary powers to address any safety concerns related to natural health products. Additionally, unlike pharmaceuticals, natural health products are already taxed. These taxes can and should fund regulatory oversight activities.

The next time you hear these common Health Canada talking points, you’ll have the information you need to ask questions and effectively push back.
