Health Canada’s Plain Label Legislation will cause more harm than good

Health Canada is targeting the natural health industry with multiple initiatives that put small and medium-sized manufacturers and retailers in jeopardy.

Requiring companies to update all of their labels is an unnecessary action. According to Caitlin Rivett-Carnac of St. Francis Herb Farm, the proposed new labels will not significantly improve the consumer experience.

Reminder: How is the natural health industry under threat?

  • Health Canada is attempting to replace our current natural health product regulations with a new initiative called the Self-care Framework. The stated goal of this framework is to harmonize the regulation of chemical drugs and natural health products. However, this change is expected to devastate the natural health industry, leading to the loss of manufacturers, retailers, and products, stifled innovation, rising costs, and reduced access to natural health practitioners.
  • To implement this framework, Health Canada has introduced several smaller initiatives, all contributing to this larger goal. Examples include Sections 500-504 of Bill C-47, Cost Recovery, and Division 31 of Bill C-69.
