Herbalist Ashley Wulkan shares her experience with brands leaving Canada

In her two years of running a physical retail space, clinical nutritionist and herbalist Ashley Wulkan has already watched two of her favourite brands leave Canada.

We can expect more brands to drop out of the Canadian market as Health Canada’s Self-care Framework makes it impossible to stay afloat.

The stakes are high.

Reminder: How is the natural health industry under threat?

  • Health Canada is attempting to replace our current natural health product regulations with a new initiative called the Self-care Framework. The stated goal of this framework is to harmonize the regulation of chemical drugs and natural health products. However, this change is expected to devastate the natural health industry, leading to the loss of manufacturers, retailers, and products, stifled innovation, rising costs, and reduced access to natural health practitioners.
  • To implement this framework, Health Canada has introduced several smaller initiatives, all contributing to this larger goal. Examples include Sections 500-504 of Bill C-47, Cost Recovery, and Division 31 of Bill C-69.
